Animal tattoos are a great way for a person to state something about their personality. Let me give you an example. Perhaps the bearer of a wolf tattoo might be stating that they are loyal and fierce. Or the bearer of a swallow tattoo might be saying that they are quick. Now, technically the tattoo represented in the picture isn’t an animal tattoo. It would be better described as an insect tattoo, because technically that’s what a spider is. But, for the purposes of our discussion let’s put it in the animal tattoo category anyway. Animal tattoos have been used since the dawn of tattooing for a number of different reasons.

It could have been used to differentiate the person from other members of the social group or be used by the person to distinguish them for some outstanding physical characteristic, such as the amount of hair they have or the shape of their face. Someone who was extremely tall might get a giraffe tattoo, for instance. Animal tattoos can also be used to try to attribute personality aspects of a particula animal to the individual, particularly ones that they don’t already have. Let’s say a person who wishes to be wiser might get an owl tattoo, for example. The wearer of this animal tattoo is probably trying to tell the world that they are dangerous and a force to be reckoned with. Then again they might have gotten it just because it’s cool.

Throughout time and literature, animals of varying species will symbolize different things. So, when one person gets an animal tattoo, it may mark a turning point in their life, or how that animal represents their soul. Some people just find a fascination with an animal species, and feel the need to have it tattooed on their body. Whereas, others may have a spiritual connection with the animal. But, in any case, animal tattoos are popular among the masses. Some of the most popular animal tattoos today include dogs, cats, dragons and snakes.

And each animal tattoo is symbolic of some greater meaning. Dogs and wolves may represent bravery and loyalty to the family. Dragons represent inner power and strength. Also representative of inner strength is the snake. Though they can also symbolize betrayal and danger. Elephants, like the one shown in the pictured animal tattoo, is commonly used as a symbol of good luck. As a matter of fact, cultures all over the world have used the image of the elephant as talisman. So, the next time you consider getting an animal tattoo you might what to give the elephant a try. Who doesn’t need a little luck now and then?
