Geisha tattoos are often seen as being graceful, erotic and sensual. It is a style that depicts one of the most alluring and mysterious women in Japanese culture. Contrary to what Westerners believe about the geisha, she is not a woman of the night. The word “geisha” translates as “person of the arts”. And that is exactly what geisha did. Their job was to entertain men through the art of conversation, singing, dancing and the playing of instruments.

Geisha tattoos almost always depict geisha’s the same way. They are shown with their faces painted white and wearing elaborate and brightly colored kimonos.

They are often shown playing instruments such as the lute or engaging in song. Other geisha tattoos are shown pouring ceremonial tea or sitting patiently in one place. No matter how they are depicted however, they are always shown with the same calm demeanor.

The reasons for getting a geisha tattoo varies from one person to the next. A person may choose to get one of these tattoos because they have an intense love of geisha or of Japan. They may also get the tattoo because they like what geisha represent; patience, elegance and grace. Or a person may get a geisha tattoo merely because they think it is cool.
