Horse tattoos feature an animal that is the pure essence of speed, strength and endurance. How many other animals do you know that can carry a full grown man over rocky terrain at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour? Not many I would imagine. Usually when you see a horse tattoo, it’s the naturalistic representation of the animal, though there are a few exceptions. Sometimes people get horse tattoos that are inspired by mythological versions of these creatures. Take the unicorn for instance.

It’s simply a horse tattoo with one horn sticking out of it’s head. Or what about Pegasus. It’s just a horse with wings. But, usually when horse tattoos are done using one of these creatures, the animal is put in a fairyland like setting. The bearer of this tattoo has taken a more untraditional choice and shown the horse as a fiery steed. I rather like this design, though it’s kind of crude. I would have like a little more detail in it. But, the symbolism I’m not too sure about. I looked all over the place and just couldn’t find a meaning for a flaming horse tattoo. Well, maybe it has significance to the bearer.

A horse tattoo captures the beauty and elegance of an animal that has been revered throughout history. There were even some cultures where the horse was worshiped as a god or in the very least an agent of the divine. Symbolizing travel and adventure, horses were well loved and respected by the Native Americans. The animals provided the Americans with the means to leave their tiny communities and venture out and explore the lands and its people. The speed and power of the majestic horses won their respect and admiration. Horses were also believed to act as guides along the spiritual journey.

Sometimes horses are also known for their loyalty and love. They have more trust in their master than anyone or anything that remove them from the trouble. As horses fight in the battle with their masters they often have become the symbol of bravery. Zodiac sign tattoos are more popular recently making horse tattoos even more common.

The person who was born in the year of horse or under the sign of Sagittarius is portrayed as being very optimistic and insightful. Whether you choose a horse tattoo for the love of the animal or because of the symbolism that this magnificent animal represents, it’s often a beautiful choice for any personal tattoo collection. Perhaps you want a horse tattoo because you have always been a fan of the wild west. Or maybe you want one because you lived on a farm and had one as a pet. Either way, the horse tattoo sports a long tradition all over the globe. Cultures have revered this animal for its nobility, strength and raw power.

They have admired steeds for the wonderful companions that they are to humans and their subtle yet cunning intelligence. The horse tattoo in the picture is apparently a tribute to a particular animal but it also could be used for it’s innate symbolism. Usually a horse tattoo only utilizes the head of the animal though I have seen spectacular examples of the entire body of the horse being used. And when mixed with a western motif, it can not only be a great tribute to this incredible animal but also can conjure up images of a time long past. Regardless, there is no animal that captures the ideals that humans hope to achieve, nobility and honor, more than the horse.
