Nautical star tattoos have a very old history. One that reaches across the ages and in a way joins together the many types of sailors from all over the world. In the days of old, back when there was no G.P.S. (global positioning system) sailors guided their ships across the vast oceans primarily from studying the night time stars. This is possible because of a few stars that never change their position in the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere there is the North Star and in the Southern Hemisphere there is a small group of stars known as the Southern Cross.

And it is these two steady images in the night sky that gave way to man’s ability to navigate the globe and explore new worlds. Thus the birth of the nautical star tattoos.

One of the biggest reasons that the nautical star tattoos became so popular is that it was of course believed by the sailors that the stars would lead them safely to their destination and then lead them safely home. And thus when they got the nautical star tattoos put on their skin they believed those would bring them the same sort of good luck on their voyages. And if you were to ask any sailor if that were true nearly all of them would say yes because they are for the most part a very superstitious bunch.

Nautical star tattoos are often popular for men, but there are many ways that you can customize the tattoo to make it girly enough to have the tattoo placed on the woman’s body. Popular places for nautical tattoos to be placed on the body include the wrists as well as the shoulders, the hips, the feet and even the back of the neck, as in the nautical star tattoo in the picture.

These types of stars have become increasingly popular and can be created in a variety of colors and shades that can be made girly through the use of shading that can be created from the tattoo. Although nautical star are known to have sharp lines that can define the shape of the nautical star, there are many girly tattoos that can remove the edges of the tattoo and use colors and shading to soften the entire effect of the tattoo. Nautical star tattoos are often recognized by the two-tone colors which are created in the design of the stars. There are lines, which create the five point stars and therefore the two colors are often used within the alternating lines to create an almost three-dimensional effect on the skin where the star has been tattooed.

Here you can plainly see a grouping of nautical star tattoos done in various colors and sizes. It’s a grouping that shows you just what can be done with these fascinating designs. But, why did this person choose the nautical star tattoos as their design element. There could be any number of reasons but most likely because the nautical star is a very old modern tattoo, going back at least a century or more.

Back in the days of yore, before modern navigation, sailors would navigate in part by the stars in the night skies, in particular the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere, and various other constellations of stars in the night sky. The nautical stars were originally used by sailors to help guide their way as they sailed through the night. They relied upon the stars to protect them and bring them home safely. So a case could be made that the nautical star tattoo, or a tattoo of any star for that matter, would be a symbol of guidance. Now as time has passed the nautical stars represent the direction of one’s life, for those of us who are not sailors but still need guidance. What’s a better reason than that?
