Peace sign tattoos are almost as diverse as the people who bear them. Especially when you factor in the colors, designs, and extras you can incorporate into a peace sign tattoo. Let’s talk about a few of the options. You can get peace sign tattoos that are thin and inked in a single color. You can ge ones that are wide and incorporate a tie-die design to it or a peace sign that is contained within another design such as a butterfly, turtle or eagle. But, you options aren’t limit to just those.

You can also get the non traditional peace sign tattoo which is symbolized by a hand holding two fingers up in a V shape. And you can even put your personal touch on that design. Consider getting your favorite cartoon character holding up the two finger peace sign. One of the coolest peace sign tattoos that I have ever seen was inked on the arm of a friend of mine. It depicted the grim reaper sitting on a park swing holding up a peace sign. It was a design that was not only funny but also contained a much deeper symbolism. What new and original designs can you get your peace sign tattoo done in?

The peace sign tattoo actually began as a British anti nuclear symbol in 1958. While some sources claim that it was designed by Lord Bertrand Russell, others claim that it was commissioned by him but designed by J. Holtom. Although it resembles certain Nordic runes, we do not actually know the source of its inspiration. In keeping with its antinuclear origins, the symbol has historically been closely associated with various movements and protests. It has, however, spread throughout the world to such an extent that it has become a generic and benign symbol for peace.

As for the symbolism behind these tattoos, well they speak for themselves. And peace sign tattoos are almost as diverse as the people who sport them, when you consider the colors, designs, and extras you can incorporate into a peace symbol tattoo. Take the peace sign tattoo in the picture for instance. This is not only a colorful design but it also combines many elements together. You have the peace sign with the Yin and Yang symbol, symbols of the sun and flowers. It’s a design that not only speaks of this persons love of peace but also his love of nature. How cool is that?

There are numerous peace sign tattoos. There is the traditional peace sign we’re all familiar with and as shown in the picture. But, historically there have been other peace signs which the average person might not be familiar with. These include the dove and the olive branch, and these are the two symbols we are going to take a look at today. The white dove has a long history as a sign of peace. When Noah, afloat on the endless ocean, dispatched birds to seek news of the flood’s end, it was the dove that returned with an olive branch in its beak, a sure sign of land. The olive branch became a symbol of the covenant between Man and God. Hence, the white dove became a symbol of peace and salvation.

But, the olive branch symbolism goes even further back then that. In Greek history and mythology, it signified peaceful intentions, as in "to extend an olive branch", and still does to this day. The olive’s peaceful connotations go back to Athena . Athena was said to have given humanity the olive tree, which had many associations with peace and harmony. Not only was the olive the source of food and oil, but its cultivation took many years to bear fruit. Its very existence implied human settlement, civilization and the peace that both required to exist and flourish. And ever since it’s been the premiers symbol of peace. So, when considering a peace sign tattoo, don’t just consider the counter culture symbol we’re all used to, but maybe consider the lonely white dove or olive branch.

At first glance, this peace sign tattoo seems to just be a light blue hand making the universal sign for peace. But with a closer look, this peace sign tattoo is much more.

If you look closely, you can see that the thumb of the hand making the peace sign is actually the head of a dove holding an olive branch, which is also a very well know sign of peace.
