I have always been a fan of phoenix tattoos in general and that is probably because I like the mythology of the great bird that burns up when it is out of energy and then through it’s own fire it is renewed once again. The phoenix is a magical and mythical bird that represents a lot of things in the history of man kind. Most notably the dawning of a new day. The way a day dies in darkness and then is reborn in the almost fire looking orange sunlight of the dawns first glimpse over the horizon.

And once again the Earth is given the life that only the sun can bring to it. The life that would not exist without that sun, or that renewal.

As far as phoenix tattoos go this one is done very well. It is somewhat of a tribal style I would say because of it’s lines and it’s detail, but a good looking one just the same. I do like how it covers this persons entire back because I think phoenix tattoos should be big like this. But I prefer that these birds were painted with wings and colors. Nothing makes a phoenix stand out better then the burning reds and oranges of an early morning sun.

This is a great example of a phoenix tattoo. I like the bright colors and the style is rather unique. But, one thing that gives me pause with this design is that it looks quite like a peacock. Doesn’t it to you? But, this phoenix tattoo is only one example of what can be done with this powerful style of tattooing. And these tattoos are steadily gaining in popularity. Phoenix tattoos are popular favorites because of their colorful plumage and ornate designs. The phoenix tattoo is thought to represent feminine qualities and virtues.

Phoenix tattoos are also thought to symbolize resurrection and rebirth. The immortal nature of the phoenix is attributed to the fact of its refusal to consume the forbidden fruit of paradise in Christian tradition. Phoenix tattoos are mostly etched on the forearms, shoulders, chest, the back and the legs. And here’s an idea for you. Did you know that the phoenix is often embroidered into the designs of Japanese kimonos. These phoenix designs are often drawn in combination with the dragon that represents a harmonious combination of the ‘male’ and ‘female’ virtues. Now, wouldn’t that make a powerful and beautiful tattoo? What design elements could you work into the design?

The phoenix tattoo presents the mythological creature that is consumed in flames and then rises from it’s own ashes. Tales of the phoenix appear in ancient Arabian, Greek, Roman, and Far Eastern mythology. In both Greek and Egyptian tales, the phoenix represented the sun, dying in flames at the end of the day and rising each morning. Early Christians came to view the flight of the phoenix as a symbol of rebirth and the resurrection, leaving the old world for the new world of the spirit, dying and rising again, reborn. It symbolized the victory of life over death, immortality, and Christ’s resurrection.

Jewish legend describes the phoenix as the one creature that did not leave paradise with Adam, and that its legendary longevity is due to abstaining from the forbidden fruit that tempted the ‘first man’. The phoenix is said to live for 500 years. When it grows tired, it builds a nest of aromatic twigs, and then sets fire to itself to be consumed in the funeral pyre of its own making. After three days, the phoenix would arise from the ashes, reborn. According to Egyptian legend, it carries the embalmed ashes of its previous incarnation to Heliopolis, the city of the sun. The phoenix tattoo is often associated with feminine qualities, duty, goodness, kindness and reliability. The flame images represent purification and transformation through fire and adversity.

The phoenix tattoo. Indeed an old classic. This type of tattoo has been around probably as long as tattoos of any kind have been around. And this one in particular is not only a very large one it is also somewhat unique in another way. Large in that it covers this persons back from the top of their shoulders all the way down to the very end of their lower back. Unique as in the tail feathers seem to be very much like the tail feathers of a peacock. And not any phoenix tattoos are made with these kind of tail feathers. Of course, the phoenix bird is a mythical bird.

One that has most likely never existed and so what it looks like is entirely up to any artists imagination. And I am not saying that is not true. It’s just that this one looks different to me from what I am used to seeing.

Regardless of my thoughts on how a traditional phoenix should look, this phoenix tattoo, I have to admit, is very well done. It is a pretty amazing piece of artwork that is well shaded and well colored and is quite stunning to the eye. In short it is a beautiful tattoo that I am sure took many, many hours to complete and the artist should be commended.
