Retro Tattoos
Retro tattoo designs are a sub-genre of modern tattooing that is often mistakenly confused with vintage tattoos. While these two types of designs may use many common elements, there is a marked difference between vintage and retro tattoos. Vintage designs usually consist of design elements such pinup girls, ships and anchors. These designs have been used for the past sixty-eighty years and are often done in a simpler, bolder design than modern tattoos. There are often inked in a smaller palette of colors than modern tattoos.
Retro tattoos can use the above fore mentioned elements, but it also can incorporate a whole range of other elements. Retro tattoos often use hearts, daggers and skulls in their design and the designs tend to be more complex than vintage designs. Another marked difference between vintage and retro tattoos is the use of color. Retro tattoos often use a wider palette of colors which are often mixed in a number of interesting ways. Retro tattoos may also use a greater variety of fonts, which makes these designs more impressive than vintage ones. Of course, this is only my opinion and both styles have their unique purpose and place in the world of modern tattooing. |
