Once the domain of renegades and outlaws, the skull tattoo has gained a certain level of popularity in recent years. The skull tattoo has historically been a symbol of death and our own mortality. And unlike other tattoo symbols, the skull tattoo retains it’s symbolism no matter what culture your in. Historically, the skull was a popular symbol of triumph over the enemy, and a warning to the people defeated in battle. Collections of skulls might be stacked by the victors in public places, as an obvious declaration of victory and grim reminder of the losses of the vanquished.

It was also worn as a trophy and even drunk out of by conquering kings. In New Guinea, skulls were placed in the rafters of the medicine house as a reminder of death always present in life. There are various forms of skull tattoos available to those interested. There is the familiar pirate insignia called a "Jolly Roger" and the military symbol called a "Death Head Skull". The difference between the two is quite simple. The Jolly Roger has the bones coming out of the side of the skull. The Death Head skull is placed upon 4 inter-crossed bones. And of course there are probably thousands of variations on these themes, so it’s quite easy to find the skull tattoo that best suits you.

Here we have a series of very interesting skull tattoo designs. Many different ones that may or may not carry some sort of common theme between them but they all look pretty cool in their own right. We’ve got the rich man skull, the dagger skull, the eight ball skull, the beer dispenser skull, the mace skull and a few other nearly indescribable designs. These are really sharp, hip, slick and cool designs that you don’t really see that often. At least I don’t.

Most of these skull tattoo designs seem to have a common theme of fun things to do, but how nasty and even scary looking skulls can be related to fun things, I am not sure. And certainly the large, winged dagger near the center of the page is not a tool for fun, or should I say not a tool for fun…for normal people. Maybe it is for others, but not for me. Even though I like all of these designs I can’t see where I would ever get one. They’re all just a little too far out for me man. But very cool skull tattoo designs just the same.

When it comes to skulls tattoos this one is much more colorful than what you would normally see. Usually these type of tattoos are one or two shades of color at the most but this one has many shades of color. A lot of the spoiled flesh, rotten skin type of colors like this was suppose to be a picture of some kind of zombie. And maybe that is precisely what it is meant to be. Who knows. But it is not a very frightening one at all. A little creepy, yes but not really scary at all.

I think, quite possibly that the color has something to do with that as well.

I personally like the skulls tattoos almost very time I see one. I just think they are cool and usually they look cool, no matter who they are on. And I tend to like the wilder ones better than others. The wilder the better. Hard, mean, crazy and scary is how I like to see my skulls tattoos. I want to see them where you would swear they are about to jump off that guys arm and come right at you. Now, that’s cool man.

A skull tattoo is a skull tattoo, right? Wrong. There are so many different things a good artist can do with a skull that there really is not enough space on this page to explain it all but we’ll try to give you an idea just the same. Some have flames coming out of them while others have daggers sticking in them and the list goes on and on. This one in particular has some wild red bloodshot eyes and it’s mouth is open as if it were ready to take a bite out of anyone who comes too close.

Most of us consider a skull to be a bit of a creepy or ghostly thing but that is not every body. Some people find skulls to be fun and friendly looking. That may be hard to believe but it is true. Some people attach the symbolism of death and decay to skulls while others may attach the symbolism of life, at some level, after death. Or even the same symbolism of death and such but as it refers to happening to you and not them. In other words if I am wearing a skull tattoo stay away from me. Obviously skull tattoos became synonymous with biker gangs in the 60′s and 70′s and while a lot of that is gone now, a lot remains.

I find this to be one of the more interesting skull tattoo designs I have seen lately. Most of us recognize the words from the famous song. War, what is a good for? Absolutely nothing! Say it again! And so on and so on. And so this is meant to be an anti-war tattoo which also explains the crosses around the skull as well as the tear that is dropping from one of the skulls eyes. But either way, this as one of those skull tattoo designs, is just flat out cool looking man. It really is.

And it doesn’t matter if it stands for war or against war. It’s still a great looking piece of artwork. I love the way the artist was able to make this whole thing look like chrome. Very good work here.

This is a very cool and very imaginative design and I like it very much. It’s a great diversion from all the other skull tattoo designs that one usually sees. You know, the ones that look like real skulls. Many of them are so much the same that they get boring but not this one. This one has a look and style of its very own.

Like most other tattoo designs, the skull tattoo is a design that has different meaning to different people and cultures. Let’s take a look at what many consider to be the ultimate symbol of human mortality. While once only considered only a sign of rebellion, the symbolism behind the skull tattoo is often more positive than negative. In the Tarot deck, for example, the Death card, often pictured as a skull, skeleton or crossbones is a symbol of change, both good and bad. The skull tattoo can also show the victory of death over life and the transience of the human existence.

but the negative impact can be tempered by the belief of some that part of a person’s soul can survive death and triumph. At the same time, it can be a sign of machismo, proof that the wearer of the skull tattoo understand and accepts his or her fate. The skull image is used in several religious cultures. The Indian god Kali is pictured with skulls in her wrathful form. Within the Kabbalistic tree of life, the skull symbolizes not death but rebirth, and is a celebration, not mournful time. Regardless of your reasons for getting a skull tattoo, this design can be one that can be both ominous and inspirational at the same time.

Some skull tattoos are immediately recognized for what they stand for, such as this one. It is that of a Nazi skull and why someone would wear this one on their body is beyond me, but to each his own. Perhaps this tattoo is on the arm of a white supremacist or someone like that. It is certainly not a tattoo that many people would find tasteful in any way.

After all the only thing the Nazi’s really stand for in hindsight are the deaths of many millions of innocent people and what might be considered the darkest days in the modern history of man. Still, people have the right to their own beliefs and for a society such as ours to work as it does, these rights must be respected. They don’t have to be liked but they do need to be respected. So consider that carefully before you simply shrug it off and close your mind to it. For it is without that respect and without that right of free speech, that entire societies fall into utter chaos. Skull tattoos can be very cool, but I would not put one of a Nazi skull up high on that list.

Skull tattoos are a design that have many meanings and can be drawn in many different ways. Skull tattoos can be a symbol of protection, strength and power. For some people who already experienced danger, it can also be a symbol of overcoming death, danger or a tough time. For those people who have overcome trials, it can be a symbol for a past life, now changed, never to revert. Skulls can also be a reminder of death and bad behavior. Although the skull tattoo may appear to resemble a negative or dangerous design, it does not always mean what it resembles.

The meaning behind a word is as strong as the meaning behind an image. Skull tattoos can be drawn in a variety of different ways. Every person that chooses to have a skull tattooed on their body has a reason and meaning. The skull tattoo in the picture depicts the skull on a tribal design field. It gives the whole design element a primitive and fierce aura around it. This skull tattoo is the perfect example of what can be done with a little imagination, fore thought and a talented tattoo artist. Use it as an example of how to incorporate the skull design into your personal style.
